About Joanne Steele and J Steele Wellness

Dr. Joanne Peters Steele (who prefers to be called Joanne) has had the privilege of caring for women and families for more than 3 decades. She has been a labor unit nurse and a public health nurse prior to becoming a nurse midwife and ob/gyn nurse practitioner, and then a nursing professor. Her commitment to education led her to become the Founding Chair of Nursing at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. Her love of knowledge and her strong commitment to finding the "root cause" of symptoms led her to earn a PhD in Natural Health and to study Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. She is a Certified Women's Health Specialist who takes a holistic, integrative and functional approach in caring for the health of women.
While Joanne could retire and pursue her many hobbies and activities, she feels that she has been called back to the service of others to provide true health care in the presence of other like-minded practitioners and healers.

Philosophy: This practice closely follows the philosophy and science of caring of the nurse theorist, Jean Watson. We believe that we are the "sum of our parts" and when we look at wellness and illness we have to look at how all the parts work together so that the body is "at ease" and not "dis-eased". In this practice we take the time to understand that even though one part of the body is exhibiting symptoms, the root of the problem may be actually inches or feet away from the symptomatic area. This approach is unlike conventional medical care and often requires true detective work to get to the root of the "disease". We will take the time to try to find the answer.
We believe that people deserve a thorough physical examination for the annual exam and time is allotted to do just that.
We believe in testing instead of guessing about what might be wrong. We offer hormonal, GI, food sensitivity and other testing and offer more conventional testing through Labcorp through our office.
We believe that everyone should receive kind and knowledgeable care.
We believe that people who need to take supplements should have access to quality products that will help them on their healing journey. If we suggest a supplement, it is because we know that it works and is not filled with fillers (sawdust) that are cheap and ineffective.
We would love to chat on the phone, but we also know that we need to take time with people who have appointments, so we will respond to you through our website or through our patient portal, Biocanic.
Restorative/ Functional Care
Looking for answers to health questions often feels like the photograph. We are sometimes told that our bloodwork/procedure show that we are healthy or there is nothing wrong with us, and yet, we still don't feel well. Looking for answers can be overwhelming and discouraging.

~As humans, we are the sum of our parts and each of our parts works in harmony with other parts to create harmony (wellness). In our Western medicine approach to illness and health, we mostly treat the symptom. While this may bring some relief, if it doesn't address the "root cause" of the symptom. We begin to have more procedures, take more medicine and rely on them to maintain our current lifestyle.

~The restorative wellness approach tests to look for cues and clues that point to the reason we are unwell, not just the symptom presented. It is like detective work and putting the pieces of the puzzle together is sometimes challenging. At JSteele Wellness we welcome the challenge and work with our patients to understand how to identify and remove issues that prevent us from living our best lives.

~Some of the most common symptoms we address are sleep issues, menstrual bleeding disorders, irritability, digestive issues, inability to lose weight, headaches and anxiety. There are many others as well. Depending on what cues we find when speaking with patients, we order lab work and other testing to find more clues. We use this information to develop a wellness plan to not only diminish the symptoms but restore wellness.~We encourage you to stop buying supplements, programs, and gadgets that are supposed to help you. People spend a lot of money on these things with the promise for better health. Invest in testing so that you know what you are dealing with. Invest the time needed to find the answers you are looking for and to follow the path that leads to restoring health to the best of your ability.

~Can we help everyone and help them heal everything that is wrong? The answer is no, but we never know what we can do until we try.
